Students in Brazil Address Effects of Climate Change with Affordable, Lightweight Materials

Led by Professor Lara Barbosa, the APIS Project (APIS is the scientific name for the bee and is a tribute to and a call for collaboration) seeks to address post-environmental disaster scenarios. With climate change as a major threat to Brazil, the goal of this blueprint is to use affordable, lightweight materials to create mobile bathrooms in shipping containers. Barbosa and her team are currently finishing a full-scale prototype that will be donated to the Brazil Civil Defense.

They have already received donated materials, and a local company (Contain It) has been contracted to build it. They are still seeking additional funding to complete the prototype and finish the project by December.

The project’s outreach keeps growing: over a thousand students have had hands-on experience with the project and hundreds more have learned about the initiative. The project’s social media presence and reach has been growing rapidly.
